Realising the importance of dam safety, the Government of Maharashtra, Water Resources Department has started Dam Inspection and Safety Services since 1980 to review the safety aspects of  dams. There are about 1651 large dams of various types and of varying storage capacities in territory of Maharashtra State Important cities and towns are situated on the downstream of some large dams.

Hence safe maintenance and operation of dams and spillway there of assumes vital importance to avoid probable danger to life and property on the downstream. Government of Maharashtra therefore sanctioned the creation of  "Dam inspection and safety services" to look after the safety aspects of the large Dams in the state as per G.R. No. IPM-1078/2318 / IMG-II, dated 10/9/1980.
